Chicago, Illinois – A hotter pattern is expected to take hold across much of the Midwest during the final week of July, with above-normal temperatures becoming increasingly likely from July 26 through August 1. While occasional cold fronts may bring brief breaks from the heat, the overall trend favors warmer-than-average conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service and the Climate Prediction Center’s 8- to 14-day temperature outlook, much of the Midwest has a 60% to 80% probability of above-normal temperatures. The highest confidence stretches from the Upper Midwest into portions of the central Plains, with warmer-than-average conditions also favored across Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, and neighboring states.

The outlook does not forecast specific daily temperatures, but it does indicate a greater likelihood that afternoon highs will exceed late July averages. Periods of high humidity could also increase heat index values, especially in the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, creating more uncomfortable conditions during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Residents should be prepared for increased cooling demands, higher electricity usage, and elevated heat stress during outdoor activities. Staying hydrated, limiting strenuous work during the hottest part of the day, and checking on older adults and those without reliable air conditioning are recommended as the warmer pattern develops.

While thunderstorms will still move through the region at times, they are expected to provide only temporary relief from the heat. The Climate Prediction Center will continue updating the outlook as the end of July approaches, with additional forecast refinements expected throughout the week.
