Madison, Wisconsin – A statewide Air Quality Advisory remains in effect across Wisconsin as another surge of wildfire smoke spreads into the state, bringing unhealthy air quality that could persist through Monday at noon. Health officials warn that smoke concentrations will increase through today before becoming widespread by Sunday morning.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, smoke arriving from the north-northeast will overspread much of the state today before settling in through Sunday. Most of Wisconsin is expected to experience Unhealthy (Red) Air Quality Index (AQI) conditions, while northern Wisconsin could briefly reach Very Unhealthy (Purple) AQI levels. Parts of southwestern Wisconsin may see Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (Orange) AQI before smoke thickens overnight.
The advisory includes communities across Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Appleton, Eau Claire, Wausau, La Crosse, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids and Rhinelander, where smoke may reduce visibility and create hazardous conditions for people with respiratory or heart conditions.
Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, pregnant women and those with asthma or heart disease, should avoid prolonged outdoor activity and remain indoors when possible. Anyone experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain or unusual fatigue should seek medical attention. Even healthy adults are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor exercise until air quality improves.
Wildfire smoke is expected to have statewide impacts by Sunday morning, with the poorest air quality likely across northern Wisconsin. The advisory remains in effect through Monday at noon, and additional extensions are possible if smoke concentrations remain elevated.
