Boston, Massachusetts – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across southern New England this afternoon and evening, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, torrential rainfall, flash flooding and isolated tornadoes. The greatest threat is expected between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., when strong storms could disrupt travel and produce localized flooding in urban and low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, the highest severe weather risk extends across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and central and western Massachusetts, where a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms is in place. Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, while hail up to 1 inch in diameter and a brief tornado are also possible, especially across western Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The Weather Prediction Center has also placed Connecticut, Rhode Island and parts of southeast Massachusetts under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall. Thunderstorms may produce more than 1 inch of rain in less than an hour, increasing the risk of flash flooding on streets, highways, small streams and poor-drainage areas. Areas outside the Slight Risk remain under a Marginal Risk for isolated flooding.

Communities including Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Hartford, Providence, New Bedford, Hyannis and Putnam should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions. Motorists traveling along Interstates 90, 91, 95, 84 and Route 24 should expect reduced visibility, ponding water and possible delays during the evening commute.

Residents should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and move indoors immediately if thunder is heard or a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued. Never drive through flooded roadways, as just a small amount of moving water can sweep away a vehicle.

The severe weather threat will gradually diminish overnight, but additional severe thunderstorm, flash flood and tornado warnings may be issued as storms intensify across southern New England this afternoon and evening.
