Eugene, Ore. – The morning air still feels cool across the southern Willamette Valley, but the sun is quickly taking control. Sidewalks are warming, skies are staying clear, and Eugene is headed toward a prolonged stretch of summer heat that will peak early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, sunshine will push temperatures to 87 degrees today after a cool start in the lower 50s. Light north winds around 5 to 9 mph will develop through the afternoon, but they won’t do much to offset the warming trend.

The heat strengthens each day. Highs climb to 90 degrees Sunday, 91 degrees Monday, and 94 degrees Tuesday, making Tuesday the hottest day of the current stretch. Nights remain relatively comfortable, with lows generally ranging from 55 to 60 degrees, allowing some cooling after sunset before daytime temperatures rebound.

Travelers along Interstate 5, Beltline Highway, and OR-126 should expect increasingly hot pavement during the afternoon. Drivers should check coolant levels before longer trips and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles. If you’re planning hikes in the Cascades or outdoor recreation around the Willamette Valley, carry extra water and limit strenuous activity during the hottest hours between early afternoon and early evening.

The National Weather Service indicates dry weather will continue through Tuesday. A slight chance of rain develops Wednesday before 11 a.m., but widespread rainfall is not expected. Monsoonal thunderstorms will remain well east of Oregon, keeping Eugene under a stable summer weather pattern.

Gardeners should water early in the day to reduce evaporation, and residents without air conditioning may want to cool homes before the afternoon heat arrives. Even without extreme temperatures, several consecutive warm days can increase heat stress, especially for older adults and those working outdoors.

Long-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures into late next week, suggesting summer heat will remain the dominant weather story across western Oregon.
