Kansas City, MO – Residents across the Kansas City metro should prepare for a steady warm-up this week, with temperatures climbing into the mid-90s by the weekend and heat index values approaching or exceeding 100 degrees in some locations.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, temperatures will gradually increase through the week as humidity builds across eastern Kansas and western Missouri. High temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s by Wednesday before rising into the mid-90s Friday through Sunday.

Forecasters said the combination of heat and humidity will push heat index values into the upper 90s to lower 100s this weekend, increasing the risk of heat-related illness for those spending extended periods outdoors.

Rain and thunderstorm chances are expected to return on Thursday, with forecast probabilities ranging from 40% to 60%, especially along and south of U.S. Highway 36. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated at this time, the National Weather Service said any storms that develop are expected to move slowly, creating the potential for localized heavy rainfall and isolated flooding.

Cities including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Sedalia, Chillicothe, Kirksville, Maryville, Butler and Moberly are all expected to experience the warming trend, with several locations forecast to see afternoon highs in the mid-90s by the weekend.

Officials encourage residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors as the heat intensifies.

The National Weather Service advises monitoring the latest forecasts throughout the week, as thunderstorm timing and rainfall amounts may change.
