Paducah, KY – Summer heat is expected to gradually intensify across western Kentucky and the Quad State region this week, with temperatures climbing into the lower 90s by the weekend as daily afternoon thunderstorms become part of the forecast.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Tuesday will be generally dry across most of the region, with only a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm across southern areas. After today, scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on most days through the weekend.

Forecasters say the strongest storms will primarily be driven by daytime heating. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall will be the primary hazards with any storm that develops.

Temperatures will also trend warmer as the week progresses. Highs are expected to remain in the upper 80s through Friday before reaching the lower 90s Saturday through Monday across much of western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southeast Missouri and southwest Indiana.

The increasing humidity will make it feel even hotter. Heat index values are forecast to climb into the upper 90s late this week, with many locations reaching the lower 100s over the weekend. Some communities could experience peak heat index values between 100 and 103 degrees, especially during the afternoon hours.

Residents planning outdoor activities should stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and remain alert for rapidly developing afternoon thunderstorms through the remainder of the week.
