Gaylord, MI – Hot and humid weather will continue across northern Michigan Tuesday before temperatures ease slightly midweek, but another concern is expected to develop as smoke from Canadian wildfires moves back into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, Tuesday will be the hottest day of the week for many communities, with afternoon highs ranging from 87 to 101 degrees under mostly sunny skies. The combination of heat and humidity could make outdoor activities more strenuous during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Conditions begin to change Wednesday as slightly cooler air settles into northern Michigan. High temperatures are forecast to range from 82 to 94 degrees, providing some relief from Tuesday’s intense heat.

However, forecasters say smoke and haze from Canadian wildfires are becoming increasingly likely Wednesday and Thursday. While forecast details may continue to change, residents could notice reduced visibility, hazy skies and degraded air quality if the thicker smoke reaches the surface.

By Thursday, highs are expected to remain in the 81 to 91-degree range, with smoke or haze potentially lingering across portions of northern Michigan.

The next opportunity for rainfall arrives Friday, when a slight chance of showers is forecast along with cooler afternoon temperatures between 80 and 89 degrees.

Residents, especially those sensitive to smoke or poor air quality, should continue monitoring the latest forecasts and any air quality statements issued later this week. Those spending extended time outdoors Tuesday should also stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest afternoon hours.
