Des Moines, IA – A prolonged stretch of midsummer heat is expected to continue across Iowa through the remainder of the week, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the 90s and heat index values approaching 100 degrees each day.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, summer heat will dominate the forecast through at least the weekend. High temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-90s statewide, while increasing humidity will push feels-like temperatures close to 100 degrees during the afternoon hours.

Forecasters say winds will remain relatively light, and only low chances for rainfall are expected over much of the state. The lack of widespread precipitation will allow the hot and humid pattern to persist through the week.

The hottest part of each day is expected during the afternoon and early evening, when the combination of heat and humidity could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for people working or exercising outdoors.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing if spending time outside. Outdoor work should be scheduled for the morning or later in the evening whenever possible.

The National Weather Service also reminds drivers to always check the back seat before locking their vehicle. Temperatures inside parked vehicles can rise rapidly, creating life-threatening conditions for children and pets within minutes.

With little relief expected over the next several days, Iowans should continue practicing heat safety until cooler conditions eventually return.
