Bangor, ME – Northern and eastern Maine are facing a dangerous combination of oppressive heat and the potential for severe thunderstorms today, with forecasters warning that multiple rounds of storms could bring damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes, and power outages through tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms is in effect across portions of northern and eastern Maine. The greatest threat is expected late this afternoon through midnight, with the highest likelihood of severe weather occurring around sunset and continuing into the overnight hours.

The primary hazard will be damaging to destructive wind gusts, although large hail is possible during the late afternoon and early evening, and isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Before storms arrive, temperatures will climb into the upper 80s and lower 90s, with muggy conditions pushing heat index values even higher. A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for central and southern Penobscot County and southern Piscataquis County, where it could feel as hot as 100 degrees near Dover-Foxcroft and 97 degrees in Bangor.

Communities including Bangor, Dover-Foxcroft, Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, Millinocket, Greenville, Calais, Eastport, and Machias should closely monitor weather conditions throughout the day.

Because the severe weather threat extends well after sunset, residents are urged to have multiple reliable ways to receive weather warnings, including overnight alerts. Secure loose outdoor items, be prepared for possible power outages, and move indoors immediately if severe thunderstorms approach.
