Davenport, IA – A prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather will continue across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois through Saturday, with heat index values climbing into the upper 90s each afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, peak heat index values of 95 to 100 degrees are forecast each day through Saturday, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable individuals without adequate cooling.

Communities including Davenport, Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Dubuque, Clinton, Burlington, Moline, Rock Island, Sterling, Macomb, and Freeport can expect afternoon temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s, with humidity making it feel significantly hotter.

Forecasters warn that several consecutive days of elevated heat can become increasingly dangerous because the body has less opportunity to recover, especially with warm overnight temperatures. The prolonged heat may pose the greatest risk to older adults, young children, those with chronic medical conditions, and people who work or spend extended periods outdoors.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Employers with outdoor crews should schedule frequent rest breaks and monitor workers for signs of heat illness.

Officials also remind everyone to never leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

The hot pattern is expected to continue through at least Saturday before any significant relief arrives.
