Binghamton, NY – A dangerous combination of heat, humidity, and hazy conditions will impact central New York and northeast Pennsylvania today, with Canadian wildfire smoke expected to move into the region by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Heat Advisory is in effect Tuesday for all of central New York and much of northeast Pennsylvania. High temperatures are forecast to reach the low to mid-90s, with some valley locations climbing into the upper 90s. Heat index values are expected to peak between 95 and 100 degrees, while a few locations in the Finger Lakes region could approach 105 degrees.
Communities including Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, Cortland, Oneonta, Syracuse, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Honesdale, and Montrose are expected to experience the hottest conditions during the afternoon.
The heat will continue into Wednesday, particularly across northeast Pennsylvania, where advisories remain in effect for Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, and southern Wayne counties.
In addition to the heat, forecasters expect widespread Canadian wildfire smoke to spread across the region by Wednesday morning, creating hazy skies and potentially reducing air quality. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions, may want to limit prolonged outdoor activity if smoke concentrations increase.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and monitor the latest air quality and weather updates.
