Chicago, IL – After several days of summer heat and humidity, the Chicago area could see a more active weather pattern heading into the weekend as thunderstorm chances increase and temperatures begin to ease.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist through Thursday, with afternoon heat index values ranging from 100 to 105 degrees inland. Communities closer to Lake Michigan may experience some relief from afternoon lake breezes, but most of northern Illinois will remain warm through the workweek.
High temperatures are forecast to reach the low to upper 90s through Thursday, while overnight lows remain muggy in the low to mid-70s.
The forecast begins to change on Friday, when scattered thunderstorms return to the region. Storm chances continue into Saturday, bringing the potential for periods of rain and lightning as a slightly cooler air mass settles into the area.
Temperatures are expected to moderate by the weekend, with highs generally in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Overnight lows could dip into the upper 60s to lower 70s by early Saturday, offering a noticeable break from the warmer nights experienced earlier in the week.
While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, residents with outdoor plans late this week and over the weekend should monitor the latest forecast as thunderstorm timing and coverage become clearer.
For now, forecasters advise staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and keeping an eye on changing weather conditions as the weekend approaches.
