Aurora, IL – Aurora police are investigating a late-night shooting that left two young men wounded and damaged a nearby middle school building on the city’s Near East Side.
According to the Aurora Police Department, officers responded at approximately 10:55 p.m. Friday, July 11, to the area of Jackson Place and Anderson Street after ShotSpotter alerts detected multiple rounds of gunfire.
Responding officers found two Aurora men, ages 19 and 20, suffering from gunshot wounds. The 20-year-old was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, while the 19-year-old was transferred to another hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Investigators processed the scene and recovered multiple shell casings and other evidence. Police also determined that Waldo Middle School was struck by gunfire during the incident. Officials said no one was inside the school at the time.
According to detectives, preliminary information indicates the victims were attending a gathering at a residence in the 0-100 block of Jackson Place when they were struck by gunfire. Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and said there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community.
