Phoenix, Ariz. The desert is heating up fast, but darker clouds are already hinting at a changing pattern. Blazing afternoon temperatures will dominate first, then increasing moisture could spark scattered thunderstorms across the Valley as the week progresses.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, temperatures will climb to 108 degrees this afternoon with heat index values as high as 113 degrees. Skies become partly to mostly cloudy through the day as monsoon moisture slowly increases. A slight chance of showers lingers early, while isolated thunderstorms become possible later in the week.

The extreme heat will create dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Sidewalks, parking lots and vehicles will heat rapidly by midday. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during the hottest hours, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.

Drivers on Interstate 10, Loop 101, Loop 202 and Interstate 17 should expect intense glare and shimmering pavement during the afternoon commute. While widespread travel disruptions are not expected today, any thunderstorm that develops later this week could briefly reduce visibility, produce gusty winds and create localized ponding on roads.

Wednesday continues the hot pattern with another high near 108 degrees and a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms. Rain chances increase Wednesday night before continuing into Thursday, when temperatures ease slightly into the lower 100s. Localized heavy rainfall, lightning and brief gusty winds are possible with stronger storms, although coverage remains scattered.

National weather discussions continue to highlight active thunderstorm development across portions of the Plains and increasing monsoon moisture over the Desert Southwest. While Phoenix is not expecting widespread severe weather, residents should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions during the afternoon and evening hours.
