Florida – Thick humidity is already hanging over northeast Florida, and the atmosphere is primed for another active summer afternoon. Sunshine will quickly push temperatures higher before thunderstorms develop, creating a combination of dangerous heat, heavy downpours, and lightning that could disrupt travel across the Jacksonville metro.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, temperatures will climb to around 92 degrees this afternoon while the heat index reaches as high as 105 degrees before scattered thunderstorms develop after 2 p.m. Rain chances increase to 90 percent, with locally heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and wind gusts possible in the strongest storms.
Motorists should expect changing conditions along Interstate 95, Interstate 10, Interstate 295, Butler Boulevard, and U.S. 17 as storms develop during the afternoon and evening. Wet pavement, ponding water, and sharply reduced visibility could slow traffic with little warning. Plan extra travel time if you’re commuting later today, and never drive through flooded roadways.
The unsettled weather continues into Tuesday. A 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after late morning, with another round of locally heavy rain possible. While the greatest national flash flood threat remains across portions of the Southeast and Gulf Coast, northeast Florida will continue to experience the typical summer pattern of slow-moving thunderstorms capable of producing isolated flooding in poor-drainage areas. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out within stronger rotating storms, although the primary hazards remain lightning, torrential rain, and gusty winds.
By Wednesday, sunshine returns for much of the day before another 30 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Highs climb to 93 degrees, followed by 95 degrees Thursday, keeping heat stress elevated through the remainder of the week.
