Amarillo, Texas – Drivers across the Amarillo area should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions this afternoon as slow-moving thunderstorms produce torrential rainfall capable of triggering flash flooding, with a Flash Flood Warning in effect through 5:15 p.m. CDT.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, thunderstorms are producing rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour, creating an increasing threat of flash flooding across Amarillo and nearby communities. Forecasters are also closely monitoring areas outside the city for additional flooding concerns as storms drift slowly across the Texas Panhandle. The heightened flooding threat is expected to continue through at least 5:30 p.m.

Low-water crossings, underpasses, urban streets and other poor-drainage locations are most vulnerable to rapid flooding. Communities including Amarillo, Claude, Vega, Borger, Dumas and surrounding areas could experience water-covered roads if heavy rain persists over the same locations.

Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly as visibility drops in torrential rain and floodwaters accumulate on roadways. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded streets and should remember the National Weather Service’s safety message: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Residents should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and be prepared for additional Flash Flood Warnings if thunderstorms continue to produce excessive rainfall. Conditions can change quickly, and localized flooding may develop with little advance notice while storms remain nearly stationary.
