Urbana, IL – Five people have been arrested after an 18-year-old woman was shot Tuesday night in Urbana, where investigators recovered multiple firearms, including one modified with an illegal machine gun conversion device.
According to the Urbana Police Department, officers responded at approximately 11:11 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, to the 1200 block of Brookstone Court after receiving reports of shots fired.
Police secured the scene and recovered approximately 30 spent shell casings during the initial investigation.
A short time later, an 18-year-old woman arrived at Carle Hospital with a gunshot wound. Detectives determined she had been shot in the parking lot of the Brookstone Court apartment complex. Her current condition has not been released.
As the investigation continued, detectives executed multiple search warrants, recovering four firearms. Police said one of the guns was equipped with an illegal “switch” conversion device, which transforms a semiautomatic pistol into a fully automatic weapon.
The investigation, which included foot pursuits, resulted in the preliminary arrests of:
- Isaiah Tapscott, 20 – Possession of a Machine Gun; Resisting Arrest
- Martell Johnson, 19 – Possession of a Machine Gun; Resisting Arrest
- Joel Hayes, 19 – Possession of a Machine Gun; Resisting Arrest
- Brendon Brown, 18 – Possession of a Machine Gun; Resisting Arrest
- A 17-year-old juvenile – Preliminary charge of Possession of a Machine Gun
Police emphasized these are preliminary charges. Formal charging decisions will be made by the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office after reviewing the evidence. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
