Woodward, OK – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across western and northern Oklahoma starting by 11 a.m. Saturday as wind gusts hit 30 mph and humidity drops to 12 percent, creating a volatile window for rapid wildfire growth.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday for Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Ellis, Woodward, Major, and Dewey counties. South winds of 15 to 20 mph combined with critically dry vegetation in the 90th percentile will accelerate fire behavior across open land and road corridors.
Communities along U.S. 412, U.S. 183, and State Highway 34 face heightened risk, especially near Woodward, Buffalo, and Alva where grasslands can carry flames quickly. Oklahoma Forestry Services warns that any spark—from equipment, vehicles, or discarded cigarettes—can lead to fast-moving fires that threaten property and visibility on rural highways.
Residents should avoid all outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay activities that create sparks. Keep water sources and emergency kits ready in case conditions shift rapidly.
The elevated fire threat will persist through early evening before winds ease after sunset. Additional warnings could be issued if conditions intensify.
