Grand Rapids, MI – Michigan residents should prepare for several rounds of thunderstorms through Thursday, with the National Weather Service warning that some storms could become severe as the threat shifts across the state over the next several days.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms are expected Tuesday, with the greatest risk centered over northern Lower Michigan and portions of the Upper Peninsula between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and isolated tornadoes.

The severe weather threat is expected to increase on Wednesday, when much of northern Lower Michigan falls under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. Forecasters say numerous severe storms are possible between 11 a.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday, with damaging winds expected to be the primary hazard, along with large hail and a few tornadoes.

By Thursday, the threat is forecast to diminish, although scattered severe thunderstorms remain possible across parts of the state under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5).

The National Weather Service said the focus of the storms will shift throughout the week, with northern Michigan favored Tuesday and Wednesday before the threat expands toward southern Michigan later in the week.

Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially if they have outdoor plans ahead of the Independence Day holiday. Officials recommend staying updated on the latest forecasts and knowing where to seek shelter if severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings are issued.

Forecasters caution that the exact timing and intensity of storms could change, and additional watches or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
