Boston, Massachusetts – New England is preparing for one of its most intense heat events of the summer, with dangerously high temperatures and humidity expected to spread across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and northern Connecticut beginning Wednesday morning. Heat index values could climb as high as 111 degrees, creating hazardous conditions through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, an Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Friday evening for most of Massachusetts, all of Rhode Island and northern Connecticut. The watch includes Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Cambridge, Lowell, Framingham, Brockton, Quincy, New Bedford, Fall River, Plymouth, Providence, Newport, Warwick, Hartford, Willimantic and dozens of surrounding communities.

The prolonged stretch of oppressive heat and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Urban centers such as Boston, Providence, Hartford and Springfield are expected to remain especially warm overnight as buildings and pavement retain heat, reducing opportunities for relief.

Residents should stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Wear lightweight clothing, take frequent breaks if working outside and check on relatives, neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to the heat. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

The Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect through Friday evening, and additional heat advisories or warnings could be issued as confidence increases in the severity of the event. Continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials throughout the week as this prolonged period of dangerous summer heat approaches.
