New York, New York – Anyone with evening travel plans across the New York City metro area, Long Island and southern Connecticut should prepare for rapidly changing weather as thunderstorms capable of damaging winds and localized flooding continue through the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist into tonight with a slight risk of severe weather focused across southern portions of the forecast area. The primary concerns are damaging wind gusts and pockets of flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

The Storm Prediction Center continues to highlight portions of the New York City metro, northeastern New Jersey, Long Island and southwestern Connecticut for severe thunderstorm potential through early Tuesday morning. Areas including New York City, Newark, Elizabeth, Paterson, Bridgeport, Stamford and western Long Island remain within the zone where stronger storms could develop.

The Weather Prediction Center has also outlined parts of the region for a slight risk of excessive rainfall. Repeated downpours may overwhelm storm drains in urban locations, leading to flooded streets, poor visibility and hazardous driving conditions. Low-lying roadways and areas with poor drainage are most vulnerable.

Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded roadways and remain alert for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings that may be issued during the evening and overnight period. Those spending time outdoors should move indoors immediately if thunder is heard.

The storm threat is expected to gradually diminish toward Tuesday morning, though additional weather advisories may be issued if stronger thunderstorms organize across the region overnight.
