Detroit, Michigan – Gray clouds are beginning to gather across southeast Michigan, signaling a notable weather change after a relatively quiet start to the day. While much of Sunday remains manageable for outdoor plans, conditions are expected to deteriorate later as a widespread rainmaker pushes toward Detroit and neighboring Ontario.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, rain chances climb rapidly Sunday night, with an 80% chance of showers developing across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties. Forecasters note that brief heavy rainfall remains the primary concern as moisture increases across the region.
Sunday afternoon temperatures should reach near 78 degrees with increasing cloud cover. Conditions may still support outdoor activities for much of the day, but residents should keep an eye on the sky if attending festivals, sporting events or traveling across metro Detroit.
Meteorologists are now tracking a more organized round of rain arriving Sunday night and continuing into Monday. Latest projections indicate rainfall totals ranging from one-half inch to locally near one inch in some locations. Areas near the Ohio border could see the highest totals.
Drivers on I-75, I-94, I-96, M-10 and the Lodge Freeway should prepare for wet pavement and reduced visibility by early Monday. Plan extra travel time for the morning commute. Ponding water may develop in typical low-lying trouble spots.
The severe weather threat remains limited, but isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. The National Weather Service notes that flooding concerns increase where repeated rounds of rain occur over the same area.
Conditions improve significantly Tuesday with sunshine returning and highs near 78 degrees. Another chance for scattered thunderstorms develops by Wednesday afternoon.
Long-range outlooks continue to favor warmer-than-normal temperatures heading into late June across Michigan, suggesting a more summer-like pattern after this brief stretch of unsettled weather.
