Lubbock, Texas – Drivers and residents across the South Plains should stay alert for another round of thunderstorms developing later today as unsettled weather continues across West Texas through the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a few lingering morning showers across the Caprock region will gradually move out, allowing temperatures to climb into the lower and middle 80s this afternoon. Additional thunderstorm development is expected from late afternoon through the early morning hours Tuesday.
Lubbock is forecast to reach 81 degrees Monday with a low near 63 overnight. Childress is expected to top out around 83 degrees, while Plainview and Friona remain near 80 degrees. Aspermont could be the warmest location in the region, reaching approximately 86 degrees.
Rain and thunderstorm chances range from 20% to 40% across much of the South Plains and Rolling Plains. Brownfield carries one of the higher precipitation chances at 40%, while Lubbock and Plainview sit near 30%. Childress and Aspermont have lower but still notable storm chances.
While widespread severe weather is not highlighted, any thunderstorm could produce brief heavy rainfall, cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds capable of creating hazardous travel conditions on U.S. 84, Interstate 27 and other regional roadways.
Residents planning outdoor activities this evening should monitor changing conditions and have a way to receive weather alerts. The thunderstorm threat is expected to continue through the pre-dawn hours Tuesday before conditions gradually improve later in the day.
