Springfield, Illinois – Residents across central Illinois should use the next 48 hours to review severe weather plans as forecasters warn that a potentially significant severe weather event could unfold Wednesday afternoon and continue well into Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening, with wind gusts reaching 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch in diameter. The more serious concern arrives Wednesday, when a stronger storm system could bring damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes across much of central Illinois.

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted much of central Illinois in an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather on Wednesday. Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Taylorville and Champaign sit within the area of greatest concern.

Forecasters expect storms to develop during the afternoon before continuing into the overnight hours. While details regarding storm timing and exact locations will become clearer over the next two days, confidence is increasing that multiple severe weather hazards will be possible.

The threat extends along major travel corridors including Interstates 55, 72, 74 and 57, where rapidly changing weather conditions could affect evening commuters and overnight travelers. Power outages, downed trees and localized road closures may occur if the strongest storms materialize.

Wednesday’s setup is part of a larger severe weather pattern expected across the Midwest, with Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and surrounding states facing heightened risks. Last week’s outbreak produced multiple tornadoes across the region, underscoring the importance of having several methods to receive warnings, especially after dark.

Residents should charge electronic devices, identify their safest shelter location now and closely monitor forecast updates through Wednesday as watches and warnings may be issued with little lead time.
