Cheyenne, Wyoming – Travelers crossing some of Wyoming’s busiest interstate corridors could face dangerous crosswinds beginning Tuesday evening as wind gusts up to 65 mph threaten portions of Interstate 80 and Interstate 25 through Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a High Wind Watch is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 3 p.m. Wednesday for the state’s most wind-prone locations, including the I-80 Arlington and Elk Mountain corridors, the I-80 Summit near Buford, and the I-25 Bordeaux area north of Cheyenne.

The strongest west winds could produce gusts capable of pushing lightweight trailers, campers and semi-trucks out of their lanes, especially on exposed stretches of roadway. Transportation officials frequently report travel restrictions or closures in these locations during significant wind events due to rollover risks.

Communities including Cheyenne, Laramie, Arlington, Elk Mountain, Wheatland and surrounding areas may also experience blowing dust and rapidly changing driving conditions. Outdoor objects could be damaged or displaced, and tree limbs may break in the strongest gusts.

The combination of strong winds and dry conditions will also elevate fire danger across southeastern Wyoming. Any new fire starts could spread quickly, particularly in open grasslands and foothill areas.

Motorists should consider delaying travel during the strongest winds, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor Wyoming Department of Transportation road conditions before departing. Additional watches, warnings or travel advisories may be issued as confidence increases in the strength and timing of the event.
