St. Louis, Missouri – Residents across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana should use the next 48 hours to review severe weather plans as a potentially significant outbreak of severe thunderstorms is expected to develop Wednesday and continue into Wednesday night.

According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, an enhanced risk area stretches from eastern Missouri through central Illinois and into portions of Indiana, placing millions of residents under a heightened threat for severe weather. Forecasters warn that intense thunderstorms may produce damaging wind swaths, large hail and strong tornadoes as the system moves across the Midwest.

The corridor from near St. Louis through Champaign, Peoria and toward Indianapolis sits near the center of the greatest concern. Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, Terre Haute and Lafayette could also experience dangerous storms Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The setup bears similarities to a recent severe weather event that produced numerous tornadoes across the region. However, emergency managers and meteorologists stress that every storm system is different, and residents should focus on the threats expected Wednesday rather than direct comparisons.

Wind damage could become widespread if storms organize into larger clusters, while discrete thunderstorms ahead of the main line may increase the tornado threat. Large hail capable of damaging vehicles, roofs and crops is also possible.

Now is the time to ensure weather alerts are enabled on mobile devices, identify a sturdy shelter location and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Outdoor events, travel plans and evening activities across the region may need adjustments as conditions deteriorate Wednesday.

Forecasters expect confidence in the storm details to improve over the next 24 to 36 hours, with additional watches and alerts likely as June 17 approaches.
