Las Vegas, Nevada – Anyone planning outdoor activities in Southern Nevada this week should prepare for prolonged extreme heat as temperatures climb well above seasonal averages and remain elevated through at least Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, afternoon highs will run 8 to 10 degrees above normal throughout the workweek, with the hottest conditions expected Tuesday and Wednesday. Las Vegas is forecast to reach 108 degrees both days, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
The heat arrives as a persistent area of high pressure strengthens over the Desert Southwest. Even overnight temperatures will provide limited relief, increasing heat stress for vulnerable populations, including older adults, young children and those without reliable air conditioning.
Across Clark County, pavement and vehicle interior temperatures can become significantly hotter than the air temperature during the afternoon hours. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, especially for outdoor workers, hikers and tourists unfamiliar with desert conditions.
Officials recommend limiting outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat, drinking water frequently even if not thirsty and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short period.
The prolonged stretch of extreme heat may also increase energy demand across the region as air conditioners run continuously.
