Davenport, Iowa – Residents across eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois should use the next few days to prepare for potentially dangerous weather as multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected Wednesday, with the highest threat arriving during the afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, severe storms may begin as early as Wednesday morning before intensifying later in the day. Forecasters have placed portions of southeast Iowa, west-central Illinois and northeast Missouri in an Enhanced Risk, or Level 3 out of 5, for severe weather. Much of the surrounding region, including the Quad Cities metro, remains under a Slight Risk, or Level 2 out of 5.
The primary threats include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail as large as golf balls measuring 1.75 inches in diameter, isolated flash flooding and the possibility of a few tornadoes. The strongest storms are expected during the afternoon before the threat gradually decreases during the evening as a cold front moves through.
Cities including Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, Moline, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Burlington and Macomb could experience rapidly changing conditions. Drivers should prepare for reduced visibility, water-covered roads and debris from strong winds.
Residents are encouraged to review severe weather safety plans now, ensure mobile devices can receive emergency alerts and identify a sturdy shelter location before storms arrive. Additional watches and warnings are likely as confidence increases heading into Wednesday.
