Lincoln, IL – A quiet start to the week across central and southeast Illinois will be followed by increasing chances for thunderstorms Tuesday and Wednesday, with some storms potentially becoming severe.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Monday is expected to remain dry and mild, with afternoon highs ranging from the lower to upper 70s across much of the region. Overnight lows are forecast to fall into the lower and middle 50s.

The weather pattern becomes more active beginning Tuesday as scattered thunderstorms develop across central and southeast Illinois. Forecasters are calling for storm chances between 50% and 90% Tuesday and Wednesday, with some storms capable of becoming severe on both days.

Tuesday’s highs are expected to reach 75 to 80 degrees, while southwest winds increase across the area. By Wednesday, temperatures will climb into the upper 70s and middle 80s, creating a more favorable environment for stronger thunderstorms.

While specific severe weather hazards remain uncertain, residents should monitor updated forecasts as the midweek storm system approaches. Damaging winds, hail and locally heavy rainfall are among the potential threats often associated with stronger summertime thunderstorms.

A cold front is forecast to move south through Illinois on Thursday, bringing another chance of scattered thunderstorms, especially south of Interstate 72. High temperatures Thursday are expected to range from 75 to 82 degrees.

Behind the front, cooler and drier air is expected to settle into the region, providing a break from the stormy pattern heading into the end of the workweek.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings should severe weather develop during the Tuesday through Wednesday timeframe.
