Omaha, Nebraska – Dangerous fire conditions are intensifying across Nebraska today, with strong winds and very low humidity creating a high risk for fast-moving fires through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Friday across much of eastern Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, and surrounding communities. Northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph will combine with humidity levels as low as 15 to 25 percent.

These conditions make it easy for fires to ignite and spread rapidly, especially in dry grassland areas. Even small sparks—from machinery, vehicles, or discarded cigarettes—could quickly become uncontrollable.

The threat escalates further Saturday. Winds will shift to the southwest and increase to 25 to 35 mph, with isolated gusts approaching 50 mph in northeast Nebraska. Humidity will drop even lower, between 10 and 15 percent, prompting a Fire Weather Watch statewide.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment, and remain alert for any signs of smoke.

The most dangerous conditions will occur this afternoon and again Saturday, with additional warnings likely if winds strengthen as expected.
