Elmhurst, IL – A 17-year-old Mount Prospect juvenile is facing felony charges after allegedly leading Elmhurst police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash and injury Tuesday evening.

According to the DuPage County Stateโ€™s Attorneyโ€™s Office, the incident unfolded around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday when an Elmhurst police officer on patrol allegedly observed a black BMW sedan weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed on Route 83. Authorities allege that when the officer attempted a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles Road, the juvenile fled, prompting a pursuit.

Officials allege the juvenile ignored a red light at Route 83 and Riverside Drive before crashing into a white Toyota RAV-4. The crash allegedly caused a broken leg to one of the occupants in the Toyota. The juvenile was taken into custody at the scene.

Authorities further allege that a search of the BMW uncovered a backpack containing a handgun without a serial number, commonly referred to as a ghost gun, along with an extended magazine loaded with 24 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

The juvenile has been charged with one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, all Class 4 felonies. A judge has ordered the juvenile detained until at least his next court appearance.

DuPage County Stateโ€™s Attorney Robert Berlin said the allegations demonstrate a disregard for public safety, while Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean stated the juvenile allegedly endangered multiple lives during the incident.

The juvenile is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday, April 2, 2026.

Authorities remind the public that the charges are allegations, and the juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
