Wisconsin Traffic May 21: Fatal Semi Crash Closes I-43 in Waukesha County

Big Bend, WI – A fatal crash involving two semi-trucks shut down northbound Interstate 43 in Waukesha County early Thursday morning, May 21, according to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said dispatchers received reports of the crash around 6:06 a.m. on northbound I-43 just south of State Highway 164 near the Village of Big Bend.

According to preliminary findings from investigators, one semi-truck allegedly rear-ended another semi traveling on the interstate. Authorities said one truck operator was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second semi-truck was transported to a local hospital with what officials described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement officials stated that northbound I-43 will remain closed for an extended period while investigators process the crash scene and roadway crews complete cleanup operations. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes throughout Thursday morning and possibly into the afternoon commute.

Multiple agencies responded to assist at the scene, including the Village of Big Bend Police Department, Town of Mukwonago Police Department, Village of East Troy Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and several area fire departments.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person killed in the crash pending notification of family members.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
