Springfield, IL – A significant severe weather threat is expected to develop across central Illinois later today, with the greatest threat arriving during the evening hours.
According to the US National Weather Service in Central Illinois, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) is in place for much of the region, especially from Peoria and Springfield eastward toward Champaign and surrounding areas. Storms are expected to intensify between 4 p.m. and midnight as they move east at around 50 mph.
Forecasters warn that the primary threats include damaging wind gusts exceeding 70 mph and large hail, potentially larger than golf balls. These conditions could cause damage to vehicles, roofs, and trees.
While the tornado threat is lower than the overall severe risk, isolated tornadoes remain possible — particularly before 8 p.m. — when atmospheric conditions are most favorable.
As storms track farther south toward the I-70 corridor later in the evening, they are expected to weaken somewhat, though they may still produce gusty winds and hail.
Residents across Sangamon County, Peoria County, and much of central Illinois are urged to stay weather-aware and be ready to act quickly if warnings are issued.
