Detroit, MI – Strong thunderstorms could develop across southeast Michigan Thursday afternoon, bringing bursts of hail, gusty winds, and brief downpours during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a marginal to slight risk for severe weather is in place, mainly impacting the southern half of the region, including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Monroe, and areas along the Ohio border. Storms may begin as early as 2 p.m., with the most active window between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. before weakening by around 8 p.m.

Wind gusts near 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch are the primary concerns, though the tornado threat remains low. Storms are expected to move quickly from west-northwest to east-southeast at around 50 mph, which could lead to rapidly changing conditions on roads like I-94, I-75, and US-23.

While widespread flooding is not expected, localized heavy rain could create brief ponding on streets, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Residents should monitor alerts and be ready to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued. Secure loose outdoor items and plan for possible travel delays during peak storm hours.

Storm chances diminish later Thursday evening, but additional updates are possible if storm intensity increases.
