Grand Rapids, MI – A freeze warning is in effect overnight May 11–12 across parts of central and west Michigan, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 27 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, the warning runs from midnight through 8 a.m. Tuesday and includes Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Mecosta, and Isabella counties. Cities impacted include Ludington, Baldwin, Big Rapids, Mount Pleasant, and Clare.

Forecasters warn that sub-freezing temperatures will create widespread frost and freeze conditions overnight, especially in inland and low-lying areas where colder air tends to settle before sunrise.

The primary concern is significant damage to agriculture and vegetation. Sensitive plants and crops could be killed if left unprotected, and there is also a risk of damage to unprotected outdoor plumbing due to the prolonged freeze.

Residents are urged to take immediate precautions by covering or bringing plants indoors and protecting exposed pipes. This is a more severe cold event compared to typical frost advisories due to the lower temperatures and longer duration.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing after sunrise Tuesday, ending the freeze threat by mid-morning.
