Gray, ME – A frost advisory is in effect overnight into Tuesday morning, May 11–12, for large portions of western Maine and much of New Hampshire, with temperatures expected to drop into the low to mid-30s.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, the advisory runs from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday and includes areas such as Lewiston, Sanford, Conway, Concord, Laconia, and Rochester. The coldest conditions are expected in inland and higher-elevation locations, where frost formation is most likely before sunrise.

The primary concern is damage to sensitive outdoor vegetation. Early-season crops, flowers, and unprotected plants could be harmed or killed if exposed to freezing or near-freezing temperatures for several hours. This is especially important for gardeners and agricultural interests across Androscoggin, Oxford, York, and Cumberland counties in Maine, along with Merrimack, Carroll, and Hillsborough counties in New Hampshire.

Residents are advised to take precautions Monday evening by covering plants or bringing them indoors if possible. Even brief exposure to frost can damage tender vegetation during this stage of the growing season.

Conditions are expected to improve shortly after sunrise Tuesday as temperatures climb back above freezing.

This marks one of the colder nights in the region so far this May, reinforcing that frost remains a risk despite recent mild conditions.
