Mankato, MN – A blowing dust advisory is in effect across parts of southern Minnesota this afternoon, with reduced visibility creating hazardous travel conditions for drivers across multiple counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, the advisory remains in place until 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, impacting Blue Earth, Brown, Faribault, Martin, Watonwan, Redwood, Lac qui Parle, and Yellow Medicine counties.
Forecasters say visibility may drop to between one-half mile and 2 miles in areas experiencing blowing dust, particularly in open rural areas where strong winds can pick up loose soil.
The impacted region includes communities near the Mankato metro area and extends west toward the South Dakota border, affecting key roadways and rural highways throughout southern Minnesota.
According to the National Weather Service, drivers should be prepared for sudden drops in visibility, which can create dangerous conditions with little warning. Officials advise motorists who encounter dense dust to pull off the roadway as far as possible, turn off all lights, and avoid using the brake pedal while stopped.
Health officials also warn that individuals with respiratory issues should consider staying indoors until conditions improve, as airborne dust can aggravate breathing problems.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates as conditions may shift throughout the afternoon.
