Nelson County, ND Fatal Crash: 93-Year-Old Man Killed Friday

Nelson County, ND – A two-vehicle crash at a rural highway intersection near Lakota left a 93-year-old man dead Friday afternoon, according to state officials.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 4:32 p.m. on May 8, 2026, Friday, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and North Dakota Highway 1. Authorities say the collision involved a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 2000 Buick LeSabre.

Investigators reported that the Tahoe was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 2, while the Buick was heading northbound on Highway 1. The Buick reportedly stopped at a stop sign before proceeding into the intersection, where it allegedly failed to yield to the oncoming Tahoe.

The Tahoe struck the passenger side of the Buick in a T-bone-type collision. The driver of the Buick, identified as a 93-year-old man from Lakota, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Tahoe, a 42-year-old woman from Grand Forks, along with two juvenile passengers, were not injured. All occupants involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, according to authorities.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the North Dakota State Patrol, Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, and local ambulance services.

The crash remains under investigation. Officials have not released the name of the victim, and no charges have been filed at this time.
