Schaumburg, IL – A man is facing a first-degree murder charge after a woman was found dead inside a Schaumburg home following a welfare check late last month.
According to the Schaumburg Police Department, officers responded at approximately 9:20 p.m. on April 30, 2026, to a residence in the 1700 block of West Weathersfield Way after a 911 caller reported concern for Katherine D. Torbick, who had not been heard from throughout the day. Authorities said officers were aware of a recent domestic violence incident at the location involving the victim and the suspect.
Police forced entry into the home and located Torbick deceased, with multiple signs of trauma, officials said. The suspect, Kevin D. Motykie, was found in the garage of the residence and taken into custody at the scene.
Investigators determined the victim and suspect were in a dating relationship and living together at the home. According to police, Motykie allegedly had a pending arrest warrant related to an aggravated domestic battery case involving Torbick prior to the incident.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a felony charge of first-degree murder against Motykie. He is also expected to be processed on the outstanding domestic battery warrant.
Motykie, 56, is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the Rolling Meadows Courthouse.
Authorities emphasize that charges are allegations, and the case remains under investigation.
