LaPorte County, IN – A multi-vehicle crash involving several semi-trucks caused major traffic disruptions and left three people injured Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 30.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in the westbound lanes of U.S. 30 just east of State Road 39. Authorities say five vehicles were involved, including four commercial motor vehicles.
Investigators determined that two semis and a passenger vehicle were stopped for a traffic control device near an intersection when a third semi traveling westbound failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the passenger vehicle, forcing it off the roadway. A fourth semi then collided into the back of the initial crash.
Officials say three drivers sustained injuries of varying severity as a result of the incident. Their conditions have not been released.
According to deputies, the primary cause of the crash was following too closely, a leading factor in rear-end collisions. Authorities are reminding drivers to maintain a safe following distance, especially in high-traffic or controlled areas.
The crash restricted traffic flow for several hours as crews worked to clear debris and investigate the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
