South Bend, IN – An early morning apartment fire in South Bend displaced several residents Tuesday after flames spread through the attic and walls of a residential building.

According to the South Bend Fire Department, crews were dispatched just before 3:30 a.m. on May 5, 2026, to the 3800 block of Morgan Street at Hurwich Farms Apartments for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arriving on scene found active fire in the attic space, which had already extended between the walls of the building. Crews worked quickly to bring the blaze under control and prevent further spread.

All residents were able to evacuate safely, officials said, and no injuries were reported.

Authorities confirmed that four apartment units were affected by the fire, leaving seven residents displaced. Emergency crews remained on scene to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to assess damage.

According to investigators, the fire may be linked to lightning activity in the area around the time of the incident. However, the official cause remains under investigation.

Fire officials have not released additional details at this time.
