Grant County, IN – A 73-year-old man from Upland has died following a single-vehicle crash in Grant County on Monday morning, with investigators suspecting a possible medical emergency prior to the collision.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the crash was reported at approximately 10:38 a.m. on May 4, 2026, near the intersection of 11120 South and 1100 East. Deputies responded after receiving reports of a vehicle that had struck a utility pole.

First responders arrived to find the driver unresponsive and immediately began lifesaving CPR. Efforts continued for several minutes while awaiting a medical helicopter, but were ultimately unsuccessful. The man was pronounced dead at 11:38 a.m.

Authorities identified the deceased as John M. Walters, 73, of Upland. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Investigators noted the vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet, sustained minimal damage and showed no impact to the passenger compartment. Based on those findings, officials believe a medical issue may have occurred before the crash.

The Grant County Coroner’s Office is continuing the death investigation, while deputies document the crash scene. Next of kin has been notified.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Indiana State Police, local fire departments, EMS crews, and air medical personnel.
