
Detroit, MI – A Detroit woman has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred inside a liquor store on the city’s west side late last month, authorities said.
According to the Detroit Police Department, officers were dispatched on Monday, April 28, 2026, to a liquor store in the 19500 block of Joy Road for reports of a felonious assault. When officers arrived, they located a man, later identified as Jay Jimmerson, suffering from apparent stab wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police said investigators reviewed video footage from inside the store, which allegedly captured a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical confrontation. According to police, the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times during the incident.
Authorities identified the suspect as Verquita Latrice Reed, who allegedly turned herself in at Detroit Police Headquarters on Tuesday, April 29, 2026. Investigators had executed multiple search warrants and interviewed witnesses prior to the arrest.
On Friday, May 1, 2026, a warrant was submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Reed was subsequently charged with first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the incident.
Officials have not released additional details about what led to the altercation inside the store. The case remains under investigation.
