Decatur, AL – A manhunt is underway Saturday after an inmate fled on foot from the Decatur Morgan Hospital area, prompting a multi-agency search across Morgan County and the surrounding North Alabama region.

According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate—identified as Tyler James Freeman, 27—escaped custody and was last seen near the hospital grounds. Deputies and Decatur Police Department officers are actively searching the immediate area and nearby neighborhoods as of Saturday.

Authorities said Freeman was last seen wearing a black-and-white striped jail jumpsuit, though he may have removed or changed clothing since the escape. He is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall with a brown receding hairline and brown eyes.

According to officials, Freeman was being held on multiple charges and probation violations. Records show he was in custody on warrants including obstruction of justice—probation violation, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property, and theft of property/escape.

Law enforcement has not indicated whether Freeman is considered dangerous but urges residents to remain alert and report any sightings immediately. Patrol units are canvassing areas around Decatur Morgan Hospital, with increased visibility expected throughout the day.

Residents in Decatur, Morgan County, and nearby Huntsville metro areas are asked to secure their homes and vehicles as a precaution.

Anyone with information about Freeman’s whereabouts is urged to call 911 or contact the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office at 256-350-4613.
