Seattle, Wash. – Travel across the Washington Cascades could become nearly impossible within hours as up to 12 inches of snow begins falling late tonight, threatening key mountain routes through early Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 11 p.m. Tuesday and continues until 5 a.m. Thursday for the Cascades of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, and northern King counties. Snow totals between 8 and 12 inches are expected, with the heaviest bursts developing Wednesday afternoon into the evening.

Stevens Pass along US-2 and areas near Mount Baker are likely to see the most intense snowfall, especially as a convergence zone sets up Wednesday. This could rapidly reduce visibility and create snow-packed roads, making travel hazardous or even impassable at times. Traction tires or chains may be required, and delays are likely for both freight and passenger travel.

Drivers should avoid non-essential trips through the passes, carry emergency supplies, and prepare for sudden weather changes. Power outages are also possible where heavier snow accumulates on trees and lines.

Conditions should begin improving after 5 a.m. Thursday, but additional advisories may follow if snowfall lingers or redevelops.
