Newport/Morehead City, North Carolina – Temperatures will fall into the frost zone overnight, creating a narrow window for potential plant damage before sunrise Wednesday across eastern North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, light winds and clearing skies will allow temperatures to drop enough for frost formation between midnight and 7 a.m. Wednesday. The highest risk stretches across inland areas including Greenville, Kinston, New Bern, and Jacksonville, where conditions favor patchy frost development.

Coastal communities like Morehead City and the Outer Banks are expected to stay slightly warmer, limiting widespread frost, but isolated spots could still see brief impacts. Cloud cover may reduce how widespread frost becomes, though even limited frost can damage sensitive vegetation.

Gardeners and growers should cover or bring in sensitive plants, especially in low-lying and rural areas where temperatures tend to drop fastest. Early morning commuters may also notice reduced visibility in localized areas where moisture settles near the ground.

Temperatures will rebound quickly after sunrise, but the frost threat remains in place until mid-morning Wednesday. Additional updates could follow if colder conditions develop overnight.
