Kansas City, Missouri – Record-challenging heat and dangerous fire conditions will peak Thursday afternoon before a line of thunderstorms moves in by evening, creating a rapid shift in hazards across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, temperatures will surge to near 90°F Thursday, approaching record highs, while humidity drops and winds increase. Gusts between 25 and 35 mph combined with low humidity will create elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions, especially west of I-35, including areas like Maryville, St. Joseph, and Chillicothe.
By around 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday, a cold front will trigger showers and thunderstorms moving south across northern Missouri into the Kansas City metro. Some storms could become strong, producing wind gusts near 60 mph and pockets of heavy rain, particularly along I-29 and I-70 corridors.
The timing of storms remains somewhat uncertain, but impacts are most likely overnight into early Friday. Drivers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, from fire خطر during the afternoon to strong storms overnight.
Temperatures will drop back into the 50s and 60s by Friday, ending the brief heat surge. Residents should avoid outdoor burning Thursday, secure loose items, and stay alert for watches or warnings as storms develop.
