Hastings, Nebraska – Near-record heat will push temperatures into the 90s by Wednesday afternoon, rapidly increasing fire danger across central Nebraska before a sharp cooldown arrives Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, highs will climb into the mid-80s to low 90s Wednesday, putting records at risk in cities like Grand Island and Hastings. Dry air and winds between 10 and 20 mph will combine to create near-critical fire weather conditions across the region.

Conditions shift Thursday as a cold front moves through, bringing a 20% to 30% chance of scattered precipitation along with stronger north winds gusting up to 35 mph. While rainfall will be limited, the gusty winds and dry fuels will continue to support elevated fire خطر, especially along Highway 281 and surrounding rural areas.

By Friday, temperatures drop sharply into the low to mid-50s, marking a 30-degree swing from midweek highs. Despite the cooler air, fire خطر remains a concern due to continued dry conditions and lingering breezes.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment that could spark, and remain alert for changing conditions through Thursday. Additional advisories may be issued as fire weather concerns persist into the weekend.
