Sioux Falls, South Dakota – South Dakota reports one UFO sighting for every 1,756 residents, reflecting a steady pattern of unexplained aerial activity across the state.
According to Casino.ca’s annual UFO sightings analysis, South Dakota ranks within the broader national dataset using reports collected since 1974. The rankings compare total sightings against population to identify where reports are most concentrated.
While lower in population, South Dakota has recorded hundreds of sightings across cities like Sioux Falls and Rapid City, along with vast rural regions known for dark skies and minimal light interference. Researchers say these conditions allow for clearer observation of aerial phenomena.
The state is linked to several notable cases. In 1953, multiple witnesses reported bright objects moving rapidly across the sky over Rapid City during a wave of sightings across the Midwest. In another instance, residents near the Black Hills have described glowing lights hovering and changing direction over mountainous terrain.
More recent reports included in national databases describe silent objects, sudden acceleration, and lights moving in ways inconsistent with conventional aircraft. None of the sightings have been confirmed as extraterrestrial.
Researchers point to South Dakota’s expansive open landscapes, low population density, and clear night visibility as key factors contributing to its reporting rate.
Nationwide, the average chance of reporting a UFO sighting is estimated at about 1 in 1,700, placing South Dakota close to the national average.
Sightings are most frequently reported during nighttime hours, particularly by drivers, rural residents, and night-shift workers observing open skies.
South Dakota’s data reflects a consistent, if less concentrated, presence of UFO reports compared to higher-ranking states, according to the latest annual analysis.
