Thurston County, Washington – A suspect is dead following a deputy-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon after a high-speed pursuit in the Yelm area, southeast of Olympia, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 2:37 p.m. Tuesday when a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on Yelm Highway Southeast for allegedly traveling 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. Authorities said the driver fled, leading to a pursuit.
During the incident, both the deputy and the suspect crashed. Officials said the suspect then allegedly fled on foot, and deputies reported hearing gunfire in a nearby backyard. Deputies pursued the suspect, and shots were fired, striking the suspect.
Medical aid was provided, but the suspect did not survive, authorities said. No deputies were injured in the incident.
A passenger in the vehicle also fled on foot but was later apprehended with the assistance of a K-9 unit, according to officials.
McKenna Elementary School was placed on lockdown during the incident as a precaution. The lockdown has since been lifted, and authorities said there is no active threat to the public.
The Washington State Office of Independent Investigations has been notified and will handle the investigation. Officials said additional details, including identities, will be released by the appropriate agencies as the investigation continues.
