Homewood, Illinois – Crash at 183rd and Governors Highway Leaves Teen Dead

Homewood, IL – A fatal traffic crash in Homewood Sunday night left a teenage passenger dead and several others injured at a busy suburban intersection.

According to the Homewood Police Department, the crash happened Sunday at approximately 8:17 p.m. at 183rd Street and Governors Highway. Authorities said a gray Chevy Equinox was traveling southbound in the 18200 block of Governors Highway when it veered off the roadway and struck two vehicles stopped at the intersection.

Police said the impacted vehicles included a black Buick Park Avenue and a black Nissan Rogue, both facing westbound on 183rd Street at the time of the crash. The driver of the Equinox, identified as a 36-year-old man, allegedly fled the scene on foot but was quickly located by responding officers. He was treated for minor injuries and transported to a local hospital.

The occupants of the other vehicles also sustained injuries. A 31-year-old driver and 33-year-old passenger in the Buick were transported to a hospital with minor injuries. The 27-year-old driver of the Nissan Rogue was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

A 14-year-old passenger in the Nissan Rogue was treated at the scene by Homewood Fire Department paramedics but was pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. According to police, the Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit is working with the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team (SMART) to determine what led up to the incident.
